Arkademic allows for free and open communication between faculty members in a more streamlined, easily managed and efficient platform.
As part of TRUFA’s efforts to improve communication between the union and our members, TRUFA’s Executives and the Communications Committee have been working on various initiatives to improve the flow of information. We have created several new informative video series, revamped the website, created an online newsletter, and improved our online presence on Facebook and Twitter. Our latest TRUFA-endorsed initiative is Arkademic a new social network for academics at TRU.
What is Arkademic?
Arkademic is a closed, private and secure network designed specifically for academics. It allows for free and open communication between faculty members in a more streamlined, easily managed and efficient platform.
Adopted by other BC College and University Faculty Associations such as Okanagan College Faculty Association and Camosun College, Arkademic is generating interest amongst many BC Faculty Associations. Why? Arkademic addresses a variety of communications issues that have been problematic at BC institutions, including TRU. These issues range from the security of union information and faculty organizing to Academic Freedom and communications inefficiencies amongst faculty and between TRUFA and members.
Early adopters of Arkademic include Camosun College Faculty Association and Okanagan College Faculty Association
Here is how Arkademic can vastly improve communications at TRU:
- Current communications tools such as list-serves are unwieldy and make it difficult to compartmentalize and manage information flow. Faculty members must wade through all posts to find ones of interest to them and many just stop checking these emails altogether.
- TRU Administration monitoring of faculty email accounts has been an ongoing issue and has placed a chill on communications between TRUFA and members. Many faculty members are concerned about discussing workplace issues via email on TRU servers.
- Academic Freedom and censorship, along with the need for secure union communication are serious concerns.
Arkademic resolves these issues. Arkademic is hosted on secure, non-TRU servers and is a private, closed social network for faculty.
Privacy and security are essential for improved TRUFA communication, planning, and strategizing.
In addition to the enhanced security and privacy for faculty members, Arkademic also provides a social element to faculty communications. Arkademic also allows you to create and take part in groups and discussions on issues that are of concern to you, whether they be related to your ongoing research, personal interests or political activity.
Faculty can create their own groups based on personal or professional interests, and even department or academic grouping. TRUFA officers and faculty representatives can communicate with members quickly and easily to answer concerns and strategize for possible faculty outcomes to issues as they present themselves. Faculty members can easily discuss faculty issues in a private and secure location, away from TRU servers. They can also strategize before Faculty Council or Senate meetings to strengthen faculty power in governance at TRU.
Arkademic is a closed, private and secure network designed specifically for academics.
Stay tuned for workshops and drop-in information sessions about Arkademic and its implementation over the next few weeks.
